LOCATION: Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NYC

ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN & STYLING: Fareez Giga Design

PHOTOGRAPHY: Studio Nicholas Venezia

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located in the post-war Greenwich Village apartment building, Randall House (1955), this one-bedroom, classic NYC apartment was transformed from a physically ill-defined and visually disconnected space to an open and inviting home.

Impactful architectural changes redefine each individual space of the apartment while also visually connecting them. The custom designed slat wall, for example, is a bold feature that borders the living room and kitchen, providing visibility between both spaces. The kitchen, newly open to the living room, is delineated by a bank of new custom cabinets that doubles its storage space. Additional custom millwork at the entry, dining room and living room, follows the design cues of the kitchen cabinetry, increasing functional storage and providing a unifying visual identity across the apartment.

Our challenge for the interiors was to create a warm and inviting space using a cool color palette that felt both elegant and relaxed at the same time. Shades of blues, grays, whites and greens flow through the space, from the custom-made, multi-colored wool rug to the variably textured seating upholstered in luxurious fabrics of different colors and tones. A vivid green appears in the upholstery of the striking dining room chairs, which surround a custom designed dining table by Fareez Giga Design. Made from a blackened wood base with gold trim, the dining table features a Carrara marble top that brings in a natural beauty echoed in the natural stones of other furnishings in the living space.

Sprinkled throughout the apartment, rich walnut and glimmers of gold add both warmth and softness. These materials, seen in the millwork, furnishings and light fixtures, create a dynamic dialogue with the cooler palette of fabrics to create a complex yet cohesive design.

The bathroom, devoid of natural light, looks to the natural beauty of stone to define its character. It is brightened with large Carrara marble tiles and brushed nickel fixtures and fittings, creating a simple, yet elegant space.
